3PAR: $2/GB doesn’t tell the whole story

I’m sitting in the HP Discover blogger lounge trying to focus on what I’ve learned in the last two days, but my Jet lag isn’t helping much. In any case, the most interesting announcement of the week is the one that came from HP 3PAR (from the storage POV, at least). The story In a single word: deduplication. The HP 3PAR StoreServ 7450 Arrays, by means of a software upgrade, can now enable deduplication and thanks to the ASIC, with no visible performance impact. The feature will be released later on other arrays of the family (and hopefully for...

June on the road!

June is just around the corner, and it’s going to be a really busy month for me! Next week I’ll be traveling to Denver (CO) for an event hosted by Hitachi Data Systems which is reserved for analysts and bloggers. I have high expectations: I’m sure they are working on something new and exciting (probably different from the usual HDS stuff). It will also be a good opportunity to chat with executives and to get the latest about their strategy and vision for the next future. The week starting the 9th I’ll be attending HP Discover in Las Vegas....

HP Discover: No news, good news!

I’m seating here in the airport lounge waiting for my flight back home and trying to reorganize my thoughts about this last HP Discover. Well… no news: no bombastic announcements here although there are many interesting developments to mull over. I’ll pass on commenting about “converged systems” (I do not like primary vendors’ approach in this field) but, if you are interested, you can follow the link and find a very good deep dive article from Chris Wahl. 3PAR The 7450 model, a product which I’ve already talked about, has received an important firmware upgrade and it’s now able...

HP Discover, next week in Barcelona

A few hours back home after the trip to the US and back on the road again! This time it’s HP Discover in Barcelona. Usually, I do not attend European events when I’ve already attended the same event in the US but this time I’making an exception. Why I’m attending First (personal), I will soon be publishing a report about HP StoreVirtual VSA and this is the best place to get comments and feedbacks. Second, there are some planned announcements about storage around that time. There will also be a live event that you can watch online (link here)....

HP StoreOnce VSA: not a killer but a cool product!

Yesterday, after the launch of 3PAR StoreServ 7450, David Scott announced a second product: StoreOnce VSA. What is it? StoreOnce is a series of VTLs (virtual tape libraries) with all the features that you can expect from these kind of enterprise products: deduplication, remote replication, scalability and so on. The features that I love the most about them are the scale-out capabilities, federation and the ability to enable, through a software option, deduplication at the client side too (useful to optimize network traffic and speed up backups). Use case The StoreOnce VSA is the second VSA (virtual storage appliance)...
